What is a good guitar for rhthym guitar?

My friend has started learning guitar and wants to join my band as a rhythm guitarist. He just doesn't know what guitar would be good for rhythm. He wants to get like an Ibanez super strat because of the 'buckers, but what would be a good rhythm guitar? He also wants a really heavy-sounding guitar.
