Elmer's white glue all is a good one to use for this project. Don't use much, and smear it with your finger before putting onto the cardboard surface. Then take a old towel or something like that, cover it then smooth it out. You need to be easy on it or it will move around. Then let it dry for a few days. Then you can cover it with a clear varnish. Go to the local hardware store, not Home Depot or Lowes, and ask them for the best stuff to use. It will work fine as long any you don't use much glue, and if you smear it around.
