I won a .50 carat Hearts on Fire diamond from a local radio station and of course had to pay taxes...?
on the retailed value of $3300. Well after I had picked up the diamond and paid the sales tax, I had realized that I did not receive an AGS certification for the diamond and called to question the jeweler. The jeweler stated that Hearts on Fire diamonds are known only for their cut and AGS does not recognized all of their diamonds (specifically .50 carats and under). The Hearts in Fire web site states different so I contacted Hearts on Fire and they confirmed my research and that if my diamond has a serialized number (3 separate jewlers confirmed this) then I should have a certificate. They are trying to work with the jeweler to get the doentation for me. My question is...am I wrong for pursuing the correct doentation? I feel as if I am being greedy, but my husband feels otherwise as I am having to pay sales tax as well as having to claim the prize as taxable income on our taxes. Opionions please??
